Is it true that if I pair an i5 8400 with a GTX 1080 like performance card for 1080p gaming (possibly a GTX 2070 if that comes out) that the CPU bottleneck will become less apparent as games get more demanding over the years. Because i want a solution that lasts me for a long long time without breaking the bank and also i would like to game on my 4K tv every so often so in theory, i don't need a powerful CPU. Right?

P.S. sorry if what i said did not make sense to you at all, it's just that I'm bad at explaining.

Gaming at higher resolutions require less cpu power. I don’t know how much the bottleneck there will be with the 8400 and 1080 will be (cuz there’s always gonna be a bottleneck that’s how computers work) it wouldn’t be that big of a deal if you have let’s say a 60, 75 or 100hz monitor. If you have a 144hz you should get the 8600k instead. Just my two cents :)

It may require less but that doesn’t mean the cpu won’t struggle regardless. All of my i7’s struggle at 1440 with a gtx 1080. But according to internet experts all three of my rigs are messed up.

Main RIg Lian Li O11 MINI, I7 9900k, ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero, G.Skill Ripjaws 3600 32GB, 3090FE, EVGA 1000G5, Acer Nitro XZ3 2560 x 1440@240hz

Spare RIg Lian Li O11 AIR MINI, I7 4790K, Asus Maximus VI Extreme, G.Skill Ares 2400 32Gb, EVGA 1080ti, 1080sc 1070sc & 1060 SSC, EVGA 850GA, Acer KG251Q 1920x1080@240hz

Not really, games tend to become more GPU bound as time passes but more CPU bound as well so if you want something that lasts longer you should also get a good CPU. Now GPUs usually age faster than CPUs so if you were on a budget and had to choose your rig is fine

Well technically for 4K 60 FPS you don't need that much CPU but it depends on the game, games like civilization 6 or watch dogs are very CPU bound, specially with things like geometry, draw distance and number of peds sed to max (this settings unlike most game graphics settings are CPU bound and not GPU bound) so having a good CPU is always nice to have.

Also if you want to game at high refresh rates the importance of a CPU increases even more so try to get as much cpu and gpu power as you can

No it doesnt work that way, i think the bottleneck could even get worse... (im not sure tho)

He says that it will be less noticeable because he will be more GPU limited rather than CPU bound

Well the resolution itself has nothing to do with CPU usage, like you said it is more related to framerate than anything else. If your GPU could push 140 FPS at 4K it would be more CPU limited than a card that is only capable of 60 FPS so to speak

Why do they say they are messed up?
