Current overclock on I5 8600K:

1.415V

5.0 GHZ

max 82C after 30 mins of stress testing, multiple hours of gaming leaves it in high 70s C

 

My thinking goes that if i disable the 5th and 6th core, the CPU will need less energy and make less heat, therefore allowing me to overclock the other 4 cores to more than 5 GHz. I have tried 1.45V but still couldn't get 5.1 GHz stable (all 6 cores of course) Would this work? or would there be some other consequence?

14900K, RTX 5090 (360mm AiO), 64GB RAM, 4K 144Hz OLED

It is not uncommon for overclockers to disable cores to do what you describe. Obvious consequence is less cores is less performance for something like benchmarking but in the pursuit of ghz that doesn't matter. Thats a lot of voltage btw I hope you are aware of what you are doing.

but if only for gaming and web browsing, more than 4 cores shouldn't make a difference from what i know.

For gaming and web browsing, you don't need a CPU over 5GHz. Keep it 4.5GHz so you have a stable temperature and low voltage so you can extend the life of your chip.

 

Or if you want 4 cores, could've used a 7600K.
