980ti G1 & Kraken G12

6700k @4.7 1.36v

16gb crucial Ballistix 3000mhz

asus z170ar

gigabyte 980ti

Corsair rm650

tldr i was using the card, cleaning up old programs, etc.

after a reboot, i went to msi afterburner, turned on a MILD oc, ran kombustor to check temps and now it won't turn on. did I fry it??

It was running fine up until then. using arctic silver 5 (which i believe is not conducive), the pump isnt too tight.

it does run on its igpu so i know my other components are fine. any suggestions???

Kombustor might've been a little hard on the VRM and killed it that way? G10' weak spot is the VRM because the AIO cools the core leaving the little fan to keep those VRM's from getting toasty. Best way to find out is go to device manager and see if you can see it in there, if not it's probably dead.

Even then it should have over temperature protection that shuts it down/throttles if it gets too hot.

It should and will but depending how hot it got still could be dead, it's the biggest possibility right now. Also possible that the PSU isn't good enough but considering what happened I'd say GPU first, the only way to test that is with a replacement.

it won't boot with it inserted at all. I do have small heatsinks on the vrms. i need better/smaller ones for each but at least it's something. the thing is that kombustor barely started and it shut off. just took it out and noticed dust buildup on the gold plating. could this be a possible cause?

Is the lack of power to the system a giveaway?

system when the GPU is in. When I take it out or unplug the PSU cables the system will turn on. I even tried leaving one 8pin in. The left will allow the system to turn on and if its plugged into the right it does the same thing.

Better off just buying another 980ti for like $300 used right now. Can reuse the water cooler as well if it's a reference board.

If you want to rule out the PSU get another to test but with what happened it's more than likely the GPU that fried.
