so i upgraded from a 990fx 8350 system with a 7850 to a 8700k with strix z370e. Now i need to get a new card. I will be buying it used. I do want to sim racing with vr. Mostly assetto corsa with mods, and acc. i will still do 1080p games but anything that can run vr shouldn't break a sweat with a 1080 system. so what is the bare minimum, what is a good recommended card to go with. i was looking at 970 but if a 980ti will be better i wouldn't mind waiting for it. SLI is out of question.

Thank you guys in advance.

980ti>970.

The 970 is a good card, but a 980ti is about as powerful as a 1070.  A step up for sure.  If you have the $$$ do the TI.

Not the bare minimum, but a mid range VR card.  If you have the money then by all means get a 1080ti.  Problem solved.

If you are on a budget, the 980TI is a good card for it's capability.

Try to get a 980ti with an aftermarket (not founder) cooler if you can. There really isn't a performance difference, but the founders/blower cards are really loud, while I can never hear my MSI Twin Frozer aftermarket 970, even at 100% fan speed.
