I'm trying to directly connect ethernet cable from modem to pc since my router is giving my HUGE ping spikes. But my modem only has spot for 1 ethernet port. If I get on of those splitter hub, would I be able to connect my pc and my router to the modem at the same time and actually get it to work? If hub supports the speed. My friend told me about this but he is not reliable LOL

The modem only have one IP, if you connect that to a switch (or hub in old days) your computer or the switch is the only thing that will work. You will also be completely exposed to the internet.

I want to get new router but I can't do to a reason. And my router is giving me ping spikes often now. Any fixes for that?

What reason for not upgrading the router?  What model do you have now?  Being vague doesn't really help anything, nobody really minds if you are super broke or your parents said they won't buy one.

As per others the switch behind the modem will only allow one device to be on the Internet at a time.

never seen a modern modem with only one Ethernet port. most have 4. DO you rent or own your modem?

if you rent or it is included with your internet then you might want to see if your isp can update your equipment

if you own and that is how it works you might want to look at updating your modem, that way you get what you want with less equipment.

right now the only thing I can see are these options

1. if your current modem is a true router were it can assign ip addresses beyond your public assigned one from your isp you will need a switch.

2. if it is a dummy one were the only ip is the one the isp gives you and that is it you will need a router.

I can't upgrade router because its korean router and my parents need that router to call Korea without paying extra charges. The router comes with a internet phone that can only be used with that router.

Like others said, you will need a router/DCHP server to assigns IP address to your PC and other network devices.

If the old router must exist to support IP phone then get a new router to sit in front of your old router and connect your PC to the new router.  Kind of like the diagram below

          modem

              |

       new router

          /       \      \

       /            \       \

old router     PC     other devices

   /

IP phone

Note that make sure your new router is on a different subnet than the old router.
