I'm interested in building my own server. I'm a computer science college student and am exploring networking basics and learning to customize OS. I want to create a linux server that I can use to store and access files for video editing. Ideally, I would be able to access ot remotely to pull a clip of the server onto my laptop if I need one. Was thinking of connecting 4 x 4tb WD Red in raid 6. Let me know your thoughts and recommended specs for a system like this to handle 4k video.

If you want something that easy to install and you have plenty of ram on your server you should try FreeNAS. You can try ipfire if you want linux router/switch.

As for remote access to your server i would recommend a openvpn, instead of opening ports to SMB/NFS/SSH.

Currently I'm using VMware to run Ubuntu on my laptop. Otherwise, I don't have much experience in this and am looking for guidance on how to start from scratch for a media server and file backup system. I know I could go with a NAS from Q-Nap or Synology, but I'm more interested in trying it myself and customizing it to my needs.
