I just found out about RAMdisks after I saw the LTT video on Optane memory again and wanted some more (recent) information. Right now I think it's based on the same principle of Intel Optane, in that it uses super fast, low latency memory to cache files from a mechanical HDD. I have an SATA SSD and a mechanical HDD in my laptop and was wondering if I would see any difference if I used, for example, 2 gigs of RAM as RAM cache and if there are any dangers involved with this method. I'm also wondering if you guys know any good (free?) programs that can do this?

Windows already uses all free ram as a disk cache, nothing to configure or setup.

so it would make no difference at all?

But then why the need for intel Optane?

optane was used as a page file or a ram overflow when more ram is needed than available. this has been a thing for a while now, he was jsut testing using a faster page file drive.

The only thing I use as a Ramdisk is:

• Compression with 7zip
• Export cache for Adobe apps
• FFmpeg video file conversions
• Recording video at high bitrates

Outside of those very niche things, there's really no reason to use a Ramdisk unless you can find something that benefits from it. I had to run tests personally to see if there was any difference and if that speed difference was worth the hassle to set it up.

 

Optane is specifically for caching frequently used files, AKA system files and some programs. It basically acts like a Ramdisk that selects the frequently used stuff for you.
