Software Engineering Laptop

I am starting Uni doing a software engineering degree and I need a laptop that I can take notes and do general work on. 

I was looking for the following features:

  • Good Battery Life
  • At least 8GB RAM (Preferably not soldered) as I have some spare SODIMM memory laying around
  • That's probably it, unless you recommend some other things I focus on that I haven't thought of

Price range would be around $1000 as I already have a decent Desktop. (See profile, i7-6700k, GTX 1070)

Buy a refurbished Thinkpad x220. Make sure you get the one with the ips screen and the ssd. It got me through my software engineering degree and it's giving me no problems during my master's degree course. You can usually find them for 200$ or less.
