Random question about fridges

Why are they built with doors that when opened basically spill cool air out into the room? Wouldn't it make more sence for them to be shaped more like those coolers that open from the top like a minecraft chest? Seems like you'd save a bit of money from the compressor not needing to kick on as often. Can you just take an ordinary fridge/freezer and position it like that?

actually, a lot of freezers are made like that, but the standing fridges/freezers take less floor space, so its easier to place in a kitchen. I know multiple people who have a freezer like a mc chest in their garage and a 'normal' fridge in their kitchen.
