AiMesh firmware vs normal firmware

HI,

 

I have an Asus RT-AC68U router. I have not received a firmware update in a while but a couple of months ago I got the notification that a new AiMesh firmware is available. This update has to be done manually. also there is a note below that:

 

Note : Manual firmware update will update this AiMesh router / node only, if you are using AiMesh system, please make sure you are uploading proper firmware version.

 

I am not using the AiMesh function but I am getting the feeling I should update the firmware non the less as itz seems no more updates for the regular will be coming. Can anybody shed some light on me for this? Does the AiMesh Firmware replace the regular firmware or is it really something separate?

 

Any help is greatly apreciated.
