Hey all!  I need some help planning my next build.  My budget is going to be $800, and I would like to be able to do 1440p/60fps on max settings, but if I have to settle for 1080/120, I am fine with that.

My current build is thus:

CASE: CoolerMaster Storm Trooper

CPU: Intel i5-4670K

MOBO: Asus Maximus VI Hero

RAM: 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 2133

GPU: EVGA GTX680 2GB

Cooler: Enermax Black Twister

SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB

HDD: 1TB WD Black

PSU: Corsair HX650

As you can see my current build is just a wee bit out of date, and I feel that it is time for an upgrade.  I can most likely transfer over the SSD, HDD, PSU, and the optical drive (if need be) to cut down on costs.  Mainly, I am looking for a PC to go in a mid-tower or smaller case since I want to decrease the amount of space my PC takes up, and I am leaning towards a Ryzen build.  Any help/suggestions you guys can offer is greatly appreciated.

1070ti/ryzen 5? With ram that might be over budget. Do you need a monitor too?

I am working on getting a monitor separate from the build budget.  The $800 is strictly for the pc build.  As I said, If I have to go 1080p/120fps then I am fine with that.

i'd just recommend getting a 4770k/4790k, another 8gb of ram and a better GPU, case if you want a smaller one too.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

I wouldn't upgrade the CPU, just OC it a little.  I was running that with a 1080Ti and playing 3440x1440 60fps+ without issues.    It's got great gaming chops and can easily be OC'd to 4.4Ghz+ on inexpensive air.

Since you want to go 1440p/60, you'll be needing more GPU than CPU.  Plus, Ryzen 5 isn't better for gaming than your current chip really, it's more of a lateral move.  Unless you're streaming while you play, I wouldn't upgrade just yet.

I would recommend another 8 GB of RAM, a 1070Ti or better, and more SSD love.  Just another opinion, but I honestly don't think you need to upgrade the CPU/mobo/RAM just to have similar performance.

Save some scratch and skip the i7 upgrade, too minimal for the money IMO.  +1 for the Meshify C tho :)

the i5 will bottleneck the 1070ti at higher refresh rates so might as well. he can get some of the money back by selling the i5 anyways.

Provided he sells then i5, then I can back that play.  That's the caveat.  For $180 out of pocket, no.  But for $50 or so net... yeah.

you'll be able to hit 60@1440@max in 90 percent of games, in some you will have go down to high if you don't want 45-50 fps. you could step down to the i3 8300 but i don't think its worth imo, stay with the 8400. go with a smaller card so you can go mini case in the future if you would want to do that.

you might want to get a cheaper case, if you don't care much about tempered glass, you can go for the dr zaber sentry, i think it supports M-ATX. inwin 301 is also an option.

total cost is $820.
