Normally this solution works better as you can put your wifi where it wants to go(normally celing, and the rotuer where the cables wants to go.

I'd rather not get a AP. I'd prefer a router/modem of some kind?

Routers (even the one provided by ISPs in modem+router combo) always (all that I've had at least) allow you to see which devices are connected to your network.

I can see who's connected but i would like to see how much bandwith/traffic what devices are using
