Hello, I'm an engineer using cad programs, mainly AutoCAD and a few others. Two months ago I got an Nvidia Quadro K4200 from a computer that was about to be trashed, and I installed it instead of the GTX770 I had at work. I was not sure how much more/less performance I would get, but I expected more, since it was designed for 3d/cad programs. Problem is, not only I can not see any increase in performance, it drops performance when I want to open satellite images and similar raster data in programs.

I am wondering at the moment, if the graphic card needs any specific motherboard type to work, which I doubt. Because I used another quadro graphic card with a cad based 3d imaging program some years before, with a normal computer. The motherboard on current computer is Asus H81M-PLUS.

I can not think of any other reason, and as the card causes other problems, like computer not opening unless I unplug one of the two screens and replug it again after I open the computer, I am planning to go back to GTX770 and probably put the quadro card to collect dust somewhere.

As tech support of the workplace could not solve the probem, I want to ask if anyone here have any idea, had similar experience.

Other specs:

  • Windows 10 - 64 Bit

  • CPU: Core I7 - 4770 3.40 GHz
  • Ram: 2x8GB 1600Mhz DDR3

Make sure your drivers are updated and that the software is set to use the GPU (this isn't always the default). Also verify your software can take advantage of the quadro.

Something to note as well is that you shouldn't expect a massive jump if your CPU is just an i3 or a bottom of the barrel i5 44xx series. CAD software likes a beefy GPU AND CPU not just one or the other.
