Ram compatibility frequency

Is it bad if I put a ram frequency of 3000mhz to a motherboard that supports to only up 2666mhz? Are there any disadvantages? Like voltages, speed limitation or something? Thank you very much.

I'm pretty sure the worst thing that could happen from doing that would be it just refuses to boot, and you have to set it lower, if it does boot, it probably will just automatically set it to the max speed thats supported
