What are you looking to use it for? Video? Photo?

Need it to be compact and light? Or is "large" and/or heavy alright?

i use it for photography and i dont care about size

I have a D7000. It has great ISO and works very well in low light and difficult lighting conditions, however it's cheap and plasticy and has a small buffer (if you shoot in RAW)

I just finished shooting a wedding in both infrared (canon 10d) and the Nikon D7000. Both held up just fine. The D7000 has a built-in motor drive so you can use virtually any Nikon lens going back to 1959. It really is quite a capable camera. I was a little harsh yesterday on it, but for a 1st timer, unless you are going moshing with it in your hand, it will do more than you can ask of it. (the image below is from the Canon 10d, a near 15 year old camera converted to shoot IR only)

I used to have a 50D, and while it was decent for its day I'd have some concerns today. Exposed well, it gives as good an image as any other, but if you fish in the shadows there is quite some banding. Is a stretch to a 7D (mark 1) too far? The improved AF helps a bit too.
