I'm looking into adding an external GPU to my current desktop so I can run games on ultra high with a 3 monitor setup.

My Desktop: ASUS G20CB (GTX 980, i7-6700, 32GB RAM)
External GPU I'm looking to add: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080 Gaming Box Graphic Cards GV-N1080IXEB-8GD

Just wanted advice if this is a good idea, if it will work, or if there's something better I can do given my objective.

You can just replace the GPU, I don't think it's specifically made for the G20CBImage result for ASUS G20CB

CPU: Intel Core i7 3770 @ 3.91 GHz RAM: G.Skill 4x4GB 2133Mhz DDR3 GPU: AMD HD 7970 3GB SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 500GB PSU: Corsair HX620W  Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 Case: Phanteks P400 Tempered Glass (Black) Monitor: Dell P2412H, Dell 2012H Keyboard: Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Classic Mouse: Logitech G203 Prodigy HDD: WD Black 3TB

Wouldn't a dual GPU setup would do better when running a multi-monitor setup? Since it's about pushing more monitors/pixels

Yes it would... if you're running in SLI, but SLI only works when you're running two of the exact same GPUs in tandem and are being run through the same connection. You would also need to connect them with an sli bridhe which wouldn't be possible when using an enclosure.

that not how it works.

you cant have an external GPU and internal GPU working together. it's one or the other.

as @PokeCatz said. just upgrade the GPU in your tower.

I didn't know that having an external GPU meant the internal one would be cut off. This answers everything.

Thanks!
