RAM Question

I messed up, bought one stick of 16gb of ram. My UDIMM slot can only support up to 8 per slot. Will this only show 8 gigs of the 16 gigs of RAM, or in some cases not work at all?

Taking an educated guess here because I haven't tested this sort of thing, but I'm going to assume it won't register it. 

 

RAM either works at full capacity or it doesn't, just the way the controllers on board work. So your system won't be able only utilize half the available ram on one stick when the controller is telling the system there's 16gbs which is outside of what the system can handle.

It can handle 16 gigs of ram, just the UDIM slot can only handle a 8gb stick per each slot.

Right, but if a slot can only handle 8, and the controller is telling the system it has 16, it's not going to be able to get the controller to only utilize half of the available ram.
