If you are buying a new x370 board, then its likely right now you will need to update the BIOS so it will NOT work out of the box. You will need to find ones that state they are AMD Ryzen 2000 series or similar certification on the box. If it does not include this, it will NOT work without a BIOS update.

So I'm looking to upgrade my PC and have found the new gen of Ryzen chips, the only thing is they have introduced a new chipset, but will the new chips work with the old X370 boards, or will I need to buy an X470 board?

Yes it will, but will require a BIOS update if you have a board currently. if not, then you need to look for AMD Ryzen 2000 series ready or similar certification on the product.

easy if you have a 1000 series CPU. If you don't, it's impossible. You have to be able to boot it with a 1000 series CPU to update the BIOS.

Pretty easy, but note you need a previous gen CPU to do it.If you don't you either need to find a MOBO that can flash without a CPU or wait a while and get a loaner CPU from AMD
