I'm at a university accommodation which means I'm unable to change port forwarding for thing like running game servers or accessing my Plex server from outside the building. I was wondering if there is a way of bypassing port forwarding in any way which would allow me to run game servers and potentially access my Plex server from outside the building. This website suggests using a VPN to bypass port forwarding and I have got a server running with a OpenVPN server which I'm able to connect to but I'm unable to get port forwarding working through. Just wondering if its possible or if anyone has any tips? Thank you

This is the website that said you can use a VPN to bypass port forwarding:

Sorry this isn't going to be helpful with your situation...but make sure you aren't violating usage terms you agreed to. Speaking from experience it isn't uncommon for ports to magically stop working at a university when you start doing things (accidentally or intentionally) that tick off network security.

Your Uni is going to block every non essential port, why wouldn't they.

As suggested above, try some common ports like 23, 80 or 433 which should all be open. Still no guarantee though.

You need to setup port forwarding on the VPN server you are connecting to.

This might give you some ideas.

You need to unblock the ports from the filewall on the VPN server and forward those request to your client using the Openvpn IP address.
