Worth Upgrading CPU Or Also Motherboard 1 pin

To start this topic I wanna talk about my pc, I got this pc as an 18-year-old birthday/Christmas present (lives in the UK which is the more prominent adult age) originally this system had a 750ti 8gb of ram, 1TB HDD with a Corsair CX600 +80 bronze for £600 in end of 2015/16 and of course after getting a job I've done what I can to add meaningful upgrades to the pc first and foremost was the ram up to dual channel 8Gb at 1600 Mhz, then 500Gb SSD and finnaly the big upgrade to a GTX 1080. For two years I have enjoyed my pc playing games at max plus DSR 4k at 60 frames but with the recently released game titles and modern Modded Minecraft, I have noticed hits to my frames especially in Minecraft(which sounds dumb but modded hits like a brick on ram and CPU. most games I have to turn down settings to enjoy 60fps and for Minecraft,t I have to shut down all background programs and tweak the launch options to enable better loading to even run without game shattering lag. I think this is due to my CPU.

I have an Intel I5 4460 which is the LCLGA1150 socket, so it's limited to dual channel at maximum 1600 Mhz. the CPU I have I don't think is that bad but it's starting to affect my games and I want to upgrade it but here's the issue. the only sensible upgrade for the socket I have is to go to an I7 4790k, any other upgrade in this socket type is meaningless since I will have spent £200+ to get an extra 200/400 Mhz clock on my CPU but then I think is the £320 price point worth the extra 800 - 1000 Mhz, will i see a noticeable difference for the money I spent or will i be better off getting a new motherboard with a better socket so I can also get better ram.

Essentially is it good enough to upgrade to the I7 4790k to help games run a little smoother with the price in mind or should I get a better socket on a new motherboard so I can get say a 7700 or 8700 and upgrade my ram for a better frequency and amount, at the end of the day I want a better CPU but I don't know if I should bite the bullet for a better socket. I can get an I7 8700 and ATX FCLGA 1151 motherboard for the same price as the 4790K. My case is mid tower but from what I can read I can fit an ATX motherboard like Gigabytes H270-HD3.

Remember, LGA 1156, LGA 1155, LGA 1150, LGA 1151, none of them are compatible.

I know what I'm asking is do I spend 300-400 on the 4790k or do I spend 300 on the 8700 plus the motherboard needed for the socket. is the 4790K good enough to upgrade or is the 6 core 8700 gonna give me a more noticeable difference keeping in mind i will end up spending the same

If you can get a 8700(k) mobo combo for the same price as a 4790k then i don't really know what you're asking here. The 8700 is much faster than the 4790k.

I was just about to put a post here about what I did. I got the 8700K for 270 and the mobo for 80 so I spent 350 on that which is about the same as the 4790k alone but I also had to buy new ram since 1600Mhz Isn't compatible with the 300 series chips so went ahead and got 4x8GB hyper x fury at 2400Mhz and that cost me 280*which is more than the CPU* and a cryorig cooler for the new CPU/socket and of course Noctua thermal compound and IPA99, so in the end I spent £715 on hardware, I suppose the original question was is it worth the hassle of replacing the motherboard and cpu or would the 4790K be enough of a differance to be worth the price and in the end the who can say no to a higher clock speed with two extra cores, bloody ram prices though

Yup i didn't know where you live and i wondered where you could've got the 8700 for so cheap but fair enough it's £. Still, you will have an awesome gaming experience with that 8700. The 4790k would have been enough but it is not worth it for the price.

Yup if you would've gone for a 4790k you should've bought it used. In germany used 4790k's sell for around 200€ i believe. Anyways, you did the right thing.

I have finished upgrading and I am so happy I did, whilst I was at it i cable managed the interior but unfortunately my case wasn't really designed for any good cable management so the back side panel sticks out and with my new CPU air cooler I couldn't fit my side panel case fans inside so they are now outside the case, but I can run my CPU with a 400mhz overclock from the turbo. next upgrade I definitely can't wait to upgrade to an M.2 for launch programs and OS
