Laptop for Computing

Hey guys! I just want good bang for the buck suggestions for a laptop for computing.

What computing you ask?

Iam currently working with a project using a modelling and simulating software for materials, and Ive been running the software in my PC, which is an

I3 6100

4gb rx 460 graphics card

8gb ram

However, from my findings, running  the software doesnt use gpu as its processing source (unlike bitcoin mining and hashing)

and as you can see in the picture, Iam running it on 4 parallel cores, but it still takes a long time.

So I want to find a  bang for the buck suggestions for a laptop, so i can bring it anywhere and get the results easily. i need atleast maybe atleast an i7. Thank you

So you don't need dGPU? Do you have any special requirements like display size, max weight etc? And where are you from?

BTW GL702ZC is mediocre despite Ryzen desktop CPU. Avoid. Quote from @D2ultima:

Quote

because it's garbage. Poorly cooled, terribly designed, loud, bulky, awful BIOS missing even selling points like VT support, slow RAM speed, terrible QC, QA, return/repair, etc service on top of all these issues. It's an ASUS, after all. Piss poor weak GPU downclocked to a bloody 980M performance. Why would anybody want this? It's not like it even lets the 8 core flourish. The P775TM1 is probably a significantly better unit; get it from a company that'll delid and set your 8700K to 4.5GHz+ and you pretty much have better performance already.

i dont need a dedicated gpu, but ofc. its nice to have one (rather than a crappy intel hd graphics). in display size, it would be better if its 14" and bigger, since working with a small laptop kinda sucks. for the weight, i dont care that much. Im from the Philippines :) but if i could buy a laptop here in US (currently in UC Berkeley) , then i would buy here rather than in the Philippines.

From best to good:

Dell XPS 13

HP Envy 17 with optional MX150 25W

Asus UX461UA

Asus UX330UA

HP Spectre x360 13

Acer Spin 5 13

Lenovo Ideapad 720s 13

With MX150 8W:

Lenovo Ideapad 720s 14

Asus UX331UN

Xiaomi Mi Air 13

Budget options:

Acer Swift 3 14/15 with optional MX150 25W

Lenovo Ideapad 520s/530s 14 with 8550U+MX130(940MX)+52Wh battery

Lenovo Flex 5/Flex 6

HP Envy x360 with optional MX150 25W

HP Probook 430/440/450 G5

Acer Aspire 5 15/17 with optional MX150 25W

All US prices. 8250U and 8550U don't differ much in performance due to cooling and TDP limitations. You might also want to wait for more CFL-H options. Currently the best option with CFL-H CPU in your budget is Dell G3/G5/G7 like this one here.

iam actually wanting the dell g series, but i think i need to buy one asap since my adviser already wants the project to be finished in 6-9 months :((( , even though its sad that i need to buy an "overpriced" laptop eventhough the dell g series is a really good buy.

do u know when is the dell g series are going to be out for the market?

G7 is available now in US. Other models and other countries need to wait longer, probably around 3 months

is there a really big jump of performance from the quad core to the hexacore laptops?

First, don't compare cores only. Compare real world performance like Cinebench R15.

KBL-R ULVs generally have performance between 7300HQ and 7700HQ, however it depends on which model as every model has different cooling and TDP limitations. They also need tuning to increase further the performance. For CFL-H CPUs, the same rule applies. Generally the performance is above 7700HQ, however more benchmarks are needed for more accurate results.

No, never buy laptop by choosing the cheapest laptop with the specs you want. Buying laptop is not only just specs, there are many aspects as well like build quality. I have picked some good choices for you in above post.

Correction: i5 8250U and i7 8550U. i5 and i7 ULVs don't have much performance difference due to cooling and TDP limitations. If you want to know more about the cooling of a specific model, ask me on which model.
