PC shuts down, heat problem?

Hi, so my friend has a problem with his computer. It always shuts down after like two minutes of gaming, we thought it's a heat problem, but he never get's any messages like "PC is getting too hot, shuting down" or anything, it just shuts down.We swapped the cooler and thermal paste last summer, and it worked all winter. His PC case is open at the sides right now, and right in front of an open window and the idle temp is still around 50 degrees celsius, the load is 80. His CPU is a AMD FX 8320 8-core. The voltage is at 1,488V. Maybe that's too high? Or could it be that it's not even a temperature problem? I mean the temp is still high, but maybe it's a RAM problem? Can you guys help us?

80 degrees (if thats what it is while gaming) should cause a thermal cut off, also you wont get any warnings with a thermal cut off like "PC Getting too hot" at least not from my experience.

 

It could be a PSU / Voltage issue where the power supply cannot provide enough power causing it to cut off. 

 

has this been over clocked at all ? how old is the machine ? specifications etc ? might help with any kind of diagnosis

Usually there are 2 reasons a computer will just shut down... Thermal issues, or a bad Power supply. What motherboard is he running?

I seem to have vague memories of FX CPU temperature sensors reporting values 20 C lower than what they actually are to the motherboard. So uh.. Get that thing cooled better.

That was Ryzen.

That's a pretty high voltage, and 80C is quite high for an FX. Set cpu settings to default first to isolate thermal shutdown being an issue.

Ok, so he's running an AMD Fx-8320
a MSI 990FXA-GD65 (MS-7640)
two nVidia Geforce GTX 970s 
a Cooler Master G750M

Windows 10 

That should be everything necessary...

He says that it hasn't been ovefrclocked, but he's not sure. And the PC is about three years old.

Considering Ryzen doesn't have any reported temperature bugs from memory, I would call that issue belonging to FX.

But we can't really cool it any better, he has a dual cpu cooler (two fans) and two case fans...

There's a Hyper 212 variant that was quite crappy but had dual fans.

Just get rid of any OC right now and see if that fixes the issue. If it does, then start OC to a point where it's stable.

Ok so the comnay that made his pc has "overclocked" in the name, so I'm assuming it's overclocked...  I'll instruct him to put it on normal and then we'll retry...

Double check to make sure it really isn't overclocked, maybe even lock voltage to 1.4v with stock frequencies.

Ahh ok, yeah near 1.5v isn't at all normal for auto voltages. Most these chips don't like much over 1.42v before they start trying to melt themselves

80C is WAY TOO HOT for an FX cpu, it should be below 64. Lower that voltage to 1.4 max and dial down any OC if it isn't stable or it still gets hot.

 

You may have damaged the cpu or the motherboard at this point, so be ready for the worst.

Ok so he tried it but according to him the temperatures stayed the same...trying 1,40 now
