How does Google Cast work? I have no devices on my network to cast to, yet I get suggestions from my phone YouTube app to cast to a nearby device. I suspect that device was one of my neighbours. My original assumption was it just uses your phone as a controller and commands via the network, the device to play whatever I select, using its own internet connection. That's how I thought the Chromecast worked, no I have no idea how it could possibly communicate with my neighbour's device.

So earlier this year or last year, Google rolled out an update which allowed devices to connect to chromecasts without being directly connected to the wifi network. So you may in fact have a neighbour that is using a chromecast or android enabled device supporting chromecast.

I'd imagine you wouldn't get far unless you knew the 4 digit code so you could cast to their TV. It is worth a try to see what happens though. I've never done it myself.

I’m sure your neighbours would think their TV has a virus. Someone should have made a TV antivirus April Fools joke tbh.
