yes, most of the time mixing ran modules will work. I'd get 1x8gb for upgradibility.

Hello,

I am about too upgrade my PC again after my 7 year old hard drive randomly decided to die.

I currently have:

  • i7 3770 (stock)
  • GTX 780ti
  • 8GB of ram (7 year old)
  • Dead hard drive (7 year old)
  • Random Alienware x51 motherboard from 2011-2012 which is still alive surprisingly.

What I am to upgrade:

  • Samsung EVO 250gb SSD
  • WD Mainstream 3.5" 1 TB Hard Drive
  • G.Skill - Aegis 1 x 8GB DDR4 1333MHz Ram (Will be 16 GB when I can afford it)
  • Hyper 212 Evo (Processor Fan)
  • AS Rock a77 Extreme 4 (Still in box 2-3 years old)

Is this feasible? Please tell me if something is not good enough or needs changing. I play games like Pubg, Battlefield 1 etc..

Thanks,

if you can just add in your new ram don't completly replace it.

get a 500gb SSD if you can.

get a 2-3tb as those are more storage per $.

don't change mobo or add cooler unless its a K model and you want to dump money into an old platform.

Good luck, Have fun, Build PC, and have a Wii and PS2 as your only consoles.

ZcanKal is correct. Your motherboard & cpu only works with DDR3 ram. Depending on how your old ram is setup ( 2x 4 gb sticks or a 8 gb stick) you can just add to your existing ram. Just make sure the ram capacity sizes are all the same and running the same speed.

The Z77 chipset doesn't work with DDR4. You'll be wanting DDR3 for that

So I can add upon the ram? Is the ram I have not really old  and beaten up? Sorry I am out the loop with computing components now. It is in 4 GB slots x 2 in my current mini ITX motherboard.

a 3770 won't accept DDR4, not electrically, but it physically just won't fit.  Buy a used DDR3 stick of preferably the same kind as your old stick.

Hi,

Could I just overhaul it with 16 GB of this RAM?

If everything is working just add 2x 4 gb sticks. The new motherboard you are getting looks like it has 4 ram slots.

get a 7200rpm drive instead of that, and if the MX500 is at a similar price or cheaper then get that instead. one 8gb stick paired with the one you already have is enough.
