My Asus gl502 has a motherboard problem that requires a full replacement. My model has the gtx 970m and 6700hq on the motherboard, but the exact replacement would cost around 500 dollars, but for 600 I could get a motherboard with a 980m and the same processor. Would I need an upgraded power supply to run the GPU or would it be fine with the power adapter that comes with the 970m model (100-240V at 2.34A)

Hey, isn't your problem covered by warranty? If it's a defect it should be.

Either way if you want to buy a different motherboard, though I think that's grossly overpriced, you shouldn't need a higher-rated power brick though it may not hurt to confirm that with ASUS customer support

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You may be better off buying a new laptop instead. The GTX 1050 ti is roughly on par with your current 970m, and a GTX 1060 would be even better than a 980m upgrade. The cost gap is quite small compared to the replacement motherboard.
