I'm building a new PC and I'm having some trouble deciding on a PSU. Read several reviews on some Corsair PSUs and just would like a suggestion on what the best 500-750w PSU would be. My budget is around $75-$120 and any great suggestions are welcome.

What's in the system? If it's just a single GPU (Titan excluded), 500-600w is fine. I personally reccomend the Silverstone Strider Plus 600w version because it's relativlely cheap, performs well and is fully modular. Antec and Seasonic also have some good units..

Okay well the system specs are as follows:

Case: Corsair Carbide 300R

Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 Motherboard

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K

Memory: Corsair Vengeance CML8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3

Graphics Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 OC 2GB

Hard Drive: Western Digital WD Black 1TB WD1002FAEX

Optical Drive: LG GH24NS95 24x SATA DVD-RW Drive

OS: Microsoft Windows 8 64bit OEM

I might mention I'll be getting this built for me so I just wanna make sure I get a good PSU and not one that's going to die on me in a year or so.

The PSU I've currently got selected with the build is the Corsair CX-750 V3 but I might look at the PSUs you mentioned as well as any reviews.

Thanks for your feedback by the way. Most forums I've visited and tried to get feedback from end up with no response.

Ah thanks your suggestions are most helpful. Just a quick question though. Is their any reason to take either Seasonic or Antec over Corsair. Have any of you had any problems with a Corsair PSU?

In relation to Seasonic I read on Newegg of one Seasonic PSU that blew up and well that is concerning. I'm not saying that all Seasonic PSUs are bad but rather that may have been a bad batch, so to speak. I just hope I don't hear of any other Seasonic PSUs that blow up because no one wants their PC fried by a faulty PSU.

With a setup like that, a 350-400w unit would be plenty. This unit is a solid option for the price, though you could also go for something like this if you want better reliability and added headroom for future upgrades.

Brand names with power supplies are pretty much meaningless though, as most units are rebranded. Corsair for example uses a mixture of Seasnic and CWT units (and some others), which ranges from flagship to mediocre units. The CX-series in particular for example aren't that great, especially with the current pricing.

Ah wow a great load of suggestions. Didn't expect to get as many as I have so far. Hey Christoi thanks for your suggestion, I am of course looking to be able upgrade components later so 500w would be my minimum. I currently own a HP Pavilion desktop and it came with a crappy 305w PSU. So going for a 400w wouldn't be much use. One other thing. Why do you say that the Corsair CX series aren't that great. I did hear or rather read somewhere that the CX series are made by one company and the TX series was made by another. It was suggested to steer clear of the TX series for the reason that they were made by a not-so-good company. What about the HX series, are they any good do you know. Obviously I'm not looking at the HX series just interested to know your thoughts on them.

With the CX-series (V2 is the current for 430, 500 and 600w models), the unit uses a number of low-quality components, mainly low-end capacitors and mosfets. It'll work, but there's a number of units that are of better quality for around the same price.

With the TX and HX series however, things get a bit complicated. The TX V2 (non modular) units are made by Seasonic, I believe they are based off the S12ii. The TX-m (modular) is made by CWT, which is a completely different unit overall. HX series has two versions - V1 is made exclusively by CWT (IIRC), the 650w version of the V2 is a Seasonic rebrand and the rest are CWT rebrands. All of them are decent units, depending on how much they are sold at.

You don't need a 750w psu to run that system, in fact a 500w will be fine since a 500w can run a 680 with the rest of your specs. Save money, get a 500-650w psu, you choose the brand.

For now I've swapped out the Corsair PSU and gone with your suggestion of the Silverstone Strider Plus 600w. There seems to be mostly positive reviews on it and it should perform well like you said. Thanks so much for your help and also to everyone who contributed, it really has helped me in my decision making process.

I hope you all have a great week.

Thanks for your help.

I would recommend the SeaSonic M12II 520 Bronze as your psu because it is a modular psu and its 80+ bronze certified.

Someone from this forum kindly gave me this link

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

helps a lot to find out how much you are gonna be using and to find that sweet 90% efficiency

hope this helps you as it helped me

Thanks mate for that. That did help me quite a bit. It kinda confirms that the max calculated PSU I'd need would be a 533w PSU and since it also said that PSUs can loose their power a bit over a couple of years it confirms that the 600w PSU I have selected is more than adequate for my needs. thanks once again for that, quite helpful. Good thing I didn't keep the Corsair 750w I had selected.
