What am I doing wrong?

Go to solution Solved by Debeant,

Well, it seems like no matter what I change in the UEFI, the APU will not disable the onboard graphics. It continues to be a vampire sucking up a gig of ram on top of that, and when I look for the location where I'm supposed to be able to change the usage amount of the RAM, the option just does not exist.

Edit: still can't find the BIOs setting, but in any case, I'm going to give up on OCing this APU. It's still about 20% faster than my previous CPU (even OC'd) and the per-thread performance is far in excess of my previous computer (about 35%, best I can figure), which is a good thing for gaming. I bought this one because I plan on eventually picking up a much higher-spec CPU in about a year or so anyway--I needed something with higher per-thread performance because of emulation.

Final nail was learning the lid is using TIM instead of solder, so there's my thermal bottleneck anyway. So thank you anyway Legacy99, I appreciate you being patient with me. Kind of sucks, but hey, can't win 'em all. I've still got a much faster processor out of the deal, so I'm not going to cry about it but so much.

So, I'm new around here first of all, so if I make a faux pas, let me know and I'll try to fix my screw up.

This isn't my first build by a long shot. That being said, I'm at a loss at the moment. My CPU is seeing absurd temperatures while being stress tested, considering the TDP of the cooler I'm using is almost literally double the TDP of the chip itself. When I mounted the sink, I removed the stock compound that comes with the sink and used an old standby for me, Arctic Silver 5. I used that with a Phenom II 1045T for years and a copper Zalman cooler and I swear I never saw temps above 60, even when I OC'd it to 3.4 Ghz from 2.67.

The CPU itself doesn't seem to like speeds above stock, like nearly immediate crashing as soon as I think about OCing the thing. Am I missing something or did I just completely lose the Silicon lottery?

Build:

SeaSonic x750 Gold
ASRock AB350 Pro4

Ryzen 2200G

BeQuiet! BK008 Heat Sink
eVGA GeForce GTX 1050ti

Some old case from the early 2ks, same case I used for my Phenom build...

What are you changing to overclock the CPU? You doing BLCK or Core Multiplier? What about your Voltages?

I would change the multiplier if I could find the setting. That said, I've tried changing it in the Ryzen Master software (it's just a hard number, no multipliers), and letting the mobo handle the voltage automagically. That didn't work. so I tried 1.4v, and still no luck. Even still with stock settings on the motherboard I'm getting sickening temperatures, like 79 and 80c, with the CPU just pulling in 65 watts.

That's why I feel like I may have lost the lottery and got a CPU (sorry, APU) that will not OC well if at all. It's not even stable at 3.8 GHz, for example, and stock it boosts to 3.7.

34 to 38. Once I stop stress testing, it'll drop to those temps within maybe 15 to 20 seconds.

Did you disable the iGPU in the BIOS? I know the APU's use a TIM solution instead of solder like the Ryzen chips. It is possible you lost the lottery. Try disabling the iGPU in the BIOS. It should be in the there somewhere.
