I know its not answering the question but why Linux exactly?

What are you trying to achieve?

Linus because it is lightweight. Plus I want tori elementary os on a system that is not my main system but on a system I use daily.

You will find ElementaryOS to be.....limited (despite the roots of it being grounded in Debian)

Pick a less arcane distro, Mint is very popular and works with a lot of hardware

If you just need a linux distro for some exercises or to do some very light work, or if you just wanna learn how to use it, then get a Windows laptop and get VirtualBox, it goes really, really well on my i7-8550U.

Also, how much do you wanna spend? We can't give you hundreds option for you to say "no, I just can't afford any of them" or "no, I wanted something better"

If you just want a laptop for chrome and spotify, I suggest you the Xiaomi Notebook Pro i5, get a look at gearbest or aliexpress, chinese websites. Also, the Xiaomi Air 13" is good enough with the i5-7200U tho.

You can have a look at any i3-7100U with some 60+ Wh battery.

Go for:

i3 or i5, the U versions

8 GB RAM

13-14" screen (the smaller the less battery it'll consume

Without GPU for lower prices.

Thanks for this. I cant use virtual box, because i dont want to virtualise, i want to have it physically on the machine, not virtualising. I will have a look at the Xiami notebooks.

What distro would you suggest for this use case?

Reasons I built a dedicated computer for Space Cadet Pinball...

I would say just get a cheap laptop(Micro Center has sales on some lower models all the time), throw Linux Ubuntu or Linux Mint on there, and you're good to go.

But the thing is, We dont have Micro Centre here, and most "cheap" computers whill have a shitty battery life...

Oh shoot, I missed that. Sorry mate.

Try Amazon then, usually a laptop with decent battery life can be had for in the region of 500 USD.

MacBooks has the best battery life, but it should match your needs: you'll get MacOS, which is incredible but not everyone wants it. You'll get Linux distros with VirtualBox, I don't know why you don't wanna virtualize, I don't know why you want Linux so hard, is it for work or what? And Macs are very expensive, maybe you want some MSI GS63VR instead of a MacBook, or Gigabyte Aero/Dell XPS 15 97Wh (both have the largest battery on a powerful machine)

I dont want to virtualise because i just want the os on the machine. There is software that my school is pushing that i need to use, they only have it for Linux and Mac.

As I mentioned...Linux Mint is very popular and supports a lot of hardware, or Ubuntu (though I prefer 14.04 LTS as opposed to the latest and greatest version. YMMV)

Ok, thanks for pointing this out. What are your thoughts on fedora?

I used to be big into Redhat when that was all their was back in the 90s (well, that and SuSE) and it worked quite well, but I use Ubuntu because all the Neural Net software only runs under Debian based *nixes, but Fedora is a solid choice.

I would purchase Librem 13 or Librem 15 from Purism; https://puri.sm/products/

Purism laptops make their own propriety BIOS motherboards with Coreboot. Coreboot boots ridiculously fast to the desktop screen in about 2 seconds! They have PureOS installed but you an install any other Linux distro of your choice. Personally, I have Deepin OS installed on a Samsing SSD, 16GB of RAM and it boots in 10 seconds. Shutdown is 1 to 2 seconds.

Deepin's site is https://www.deepin.org/en/
