Hey I am currently getting a partlist for a plex server/nas I am wanting to build.

The use case is 1-2 transcoded 1080p streams and possibly direct play 4k although maybe just another 1080p but direct....

Part list

It currently has a g4560 cpu and I am wondering if that would be enough for my uses, it has a passmark of 4901.

Also will be going with Windows server OS as freenas uses to much ram and also I have heard doesn't play nicely with plex..

I want this to be low cost build.

Any recommendations or disagreements  on hardware or software that I have chosen?

Thanks!

I would consider going Ryzen. You can swap the 1400 for a 1200 to cut down on cost but the 1200 still has a solid passmark of around 6800 which is still better than the G4560 by a good bit.

Have you considered Ubuntu for the OS instead of Windows?

with ryzen you'd have to add a GPU, or go with one of the ryzen chips with integrated graphics.

Whoops, I completely forgot about that.

OP could, if they have the option, use one from their PC and set everything up for remote access but yah, one would be needed for the initial setup.

Of course you do have the chance of BIOS compatibility issues.

I would rather try avoid the chance of BIOS issues.. its why in the build i linked i went for a more expensive b250 motherboard vs cheap h110, but thanks for the advice on AMD CPU!

Edit : also just to add to this, there are no cheap mini ITX for these CPU's which is a shame..
