Noctua - NH-L9a or Noctua - NH-L9i

 

what are the differences and what one should i get (am4)

The A is slightly longer at 114mm X 92 opposed to the square 92 x 92 of the I version. Both will perfom pretty much identical. The A may perform slightly better, maybe 1-2c at most from the longer fin stack to dissipate the heat with.

The A is for AMD and the I is for Intel. For AM4, get their NH-L9a-AM4.
