My current PC is A Frankenstein build. I'm planning on an upgrade soon but i would like to play with my current PC for a bit first. So I thought deliding might be fun but I know absolutely nothing about it. I have done some researching but I've not learn much.

Hears what I have found...

Quotes I think may be relevant:

*= Said to belong under X category but not confirmed

   IHS Soldered To Die

      Hyper-threading/single cores
         -(S-775) Pentium 4 HT

-(S-478) Pentium 4 HT (Prescott Core)
         -(S-478) Pentium 4 HT (Northwood "C" Core)*

      Dual Cores

         -Pentium Dual Core E5200*
         -Pentium Dual Core E5300*
         -Pentium Dual Core E5400*

   IHS Not Soldered To Die

      Hyper-threading/single cores

          -(S-478) Pentium 4 HT (Northwood "A" and "B" Core)*

      Dual Cores

         -Pentium Dual Core E2140
         -Pentium Dual Core E2160
         -Pentium Dual Core E2180
         -Pentium Dual Core E2200
         -Pentium Dual Core E2210
         -Pentium Dual Core E2220
         -Pentium Dual Core E6300

End of quotes

My CPU should be on the list on page 3 of this PDF

   http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/archives_North_America/12426_na_v14/12426_na.PDF

But for some unknown reason it is not on that list. I know this because my BIOS says my CPU is a  3.4GHZ Pentium 4 HT(I have disabled HT not that that makes any difference to the job at hand...) and there is no 3.4GHZ Pentium present on said list

My OS, pinguy12.04 a variant of Ubuntu 12.04, seams to think that my CPU is a dual core but I think this is wrong as a Google search for "Pentium 4 ht 3.4ghz" only returns the following CPU's:

   http://ark.intel.com/products/27503/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-supporting-HT-Technology-3_40-GHz-1M-Cache-800-MHz-FSB

   http://ark.intel.com/products/27504/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-supporting-HT-Technology-3_40-GHz-512K-Cache-800-MHz-FSB

Neather of witch being Dual cores. Suppose that my CPU is one of those two would it be possible to delid my CPU without wrecking it needlessly and would it have gained anything from the risky procedure.

Sorry for the long post but I needed to get all information into the article.

Thanks in advance for helping.

What are you asking? Whether delidding is worth it or not? Normally I would say no but Pentium 4s are so old you may as well.

I think he is asking wether the IHS is soldered to the die or not so that he can make his decision to delid based on if it is even possible
