Hey guys and gals, this is my first attempt at building a PC. I know just the basics, but enough to get around. I'm looking for a solid gaming rig that I would also be using for college work and the usual Twitch/YouTube/Netflix and whatnot. I'm not too worried about being able to max out games, going 4k, or VR, but it would be a nice plus.

Location: USA

Budget: $1,000 - $1,300

Monitors: Only one for now

Peripherals: I'll need a solid gaming mouse and keyboard as well as speakers

OS: Windows

What I have so far: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wNWLkd

Please go easy on me :)

Edit: Going with i5 8400, went for some cheaper stuff and stock cooler.

What's your reasoning? Pros over 1050ti or 1060?

$930 including 1060, 1600, 550W, 1TB 7200rpm, 250GB SSD, cheap ass case, decent 2x4gb ram- https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sgbzyX

That looks very good, but I'd suggest getting a Gigabyte GA-AB350 Gaming 3 motherboard (https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2pnG3C/gigabyte-ga-ab350-gaming-3-atx-am4-motherboard-ga-ab350-gaming-3). It is better for overclocking than the Tomahawk and comes with a few more features. I had a friend use a 1600 and that Gigabyte motherboard and they work together flawlessly.

Also, if you want to save a few bucks, the stock cooler is very nice and has plenty of headroom for overclocking. My friend has his 1600 at 3.75GHz all cores with the stock cooler, and it is still quite cool.

Another thing, I would highly reccomend you to get the 3000MHz version of your kit of RAM because the Zen arcitecture benefits hugely in games with DDR4-3000MHz vs lower speeds. It is here: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/FNprxr/gskill-aegis-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr4-3000-memory-f43000c16d16gisb

One last thing after I looked through the GPU options. There is a larger version of your current video card for a bit more. It's entirely up to you to buy or not, but personally I prefer dual fan GPUs for quieter and cooler running temperatures and possibly higher overclocks if you overclock it (Plus better aestetics if that is important). If you don't plan to overclock, your current card should be fine.

Here it is:

Sorry for doing this one at a time, but I have another edit. I'd suggest getting a power supply with 80+ Bronze rating because they tend to be more reliable. I found a good one here: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/TgW9TW/seasonic-power-supply-m12ii520bronze

Personally, I run a Seasonic power supply and I've been very happy with it. Plus, the one in the link is fully-modular, which helps with cable management and overall neatness.

Also, where are you going to put the 80mm fan you have in the list? The case seems to come fully-loaded.

EDIT: This one is better: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/B6XnTW/cooler-master-masterwatt-550w-80-bronze-certified-semi-modular-atx-power-supply-mpx-5501-amaab-us

i don't understand why you cheaped out on ram when it's only $1 in savings. the MX500 is better, and the W1 is crappy, get the masterwatt or a corsair cx instead.

The M/S12s are old as dirt and missing multiple protections, not worth the price when similarly priced units are newer and much better.

How are you going to cool it?

Plus, that MSI motherboard is very low-tier compared to the AM4 Gigabyte motherboard in his list, which is mid-range. I was also very unhappy with Gigabyte's Windforce 1060 when I helped a friend build a pc.

locked i5s come with a stock cooler, and it doesn't matter muvh since the i5 can't be overclocked anyways.
