New GPU Suggestions

Go to solution Solved by TimGOAT,

r9 270 or a r9 280x will suit it well

I built my computer a couple years ago and when I did, I decided to keep my old GPU (Nvidia GT 220) and PSU with the intention of replacing both shortly after...two years later I'm finally frustrated enough to upgrade.  My monitor plays at 1920 x 1080 resolution and in order to play games at that res with playable frame rates, I need run some of the lowest graphics settings in-game and even then, it's a struggle.

As far as budget, I'm by no means a hardcore gamer so I'd like to spend up to $200 max on my new gpu and was hoping to get some advice.  From everything that I've read, this budget seems to be reasonable.

Current system specs are as follows:

OS: Windows 7 (64 bit)

RAM: 8GB, DDR3

MOBO: Intel Extreme DX58SO

CPU: Core i7 950

GPU: PNY Nvidia GT220 (probably spent $75 off the rack at Bestbuy several years ago w/no knowledge of GPU's)

PSU: 450W Thermaltake (will use PSU calc's to decide what I need based on the card I get)

Any friendly advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I would recommend a R9 270. Though there won't be much overclocking headroom for 450W, you don't really need to worry about this if you're not overclocking.

If you regard my facts as wrong, feel free to rectify it.

What is your budget for buying a new graphics card?....$200 erm... to make your budget slightly bigger you should sell your previous graphics card and add that too your current budget of 200 dollars.

You could pick up a 7870

If you can find some the 7870 XT/GHZ. Also why not send about 35$ more and get something like a GTX 760. You could also get something like a 750Watt PSU. and a 7870 GHZ. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2mfTX

Since when could you sell a used GT 220 and 450w Thermaltake psu for $100..?

You'd want a new psu for something like this..

Thanks for everyone's quick feedback.  I hadn't even considered trying to sell both parts since they are pretty old.  Being new to the idea, is there a tech site you suggest selling the used parts on or is it as straight forward as ebay?  Not sure I could get $100 but anything is better than $0 I suppose.

I doubt you could sell them for more than $30 together.
