just remember to bring receipts for tax purposes and be aware they might swab some parts or ask for you to open the box.  I would carry them on since I have seen security/customs tear through checked backs ruining a lot of things

If you are buying 3 and you want to keep the boxes, you might have to check it in since it would be too bulky for a carry on.

That being said, good luck finding one/three at a reasonable price.

Buying it in the US and then taking it back with you doesn't change the fact that you're importing goods. You're still liable to pay customs duties and legally, you're meant to declare everything that you're bringing back with you that you bought while in the USA. Not doing this is called smuggling and is illegal.

There's a chance you'll just get waved through, no issues, but if you get stopped at customs, they'll want to see receipts and you'll be charged for taxes and any import duties. Even if you're meant to pay duties on something, customs can waive them, which is fairly common for one-off items that are for personal use. If you're buying more than one, the chances of the duties being waived is much less.

Bringing back items purchased outside of free circulation without declaring them is called smuggling. It's illegal, pretty big issue.

EDIT: A lot of people don't think about it, because most of the stuff people buy on vacation are things like clothes and such, which customs doesn't really care about too much. However, when we're talking over £1000 potentially in electronic components, they're going to want to know what you're doing and make sure you're paying the taxes and duties that you should.

Same rules applied to used and new stuff when importing. You'll want to get some form of proof of purchase. Without one, you could end up having to pay the taxes based on the cost of them new.
