I'm using a Dell 7720 R17 SE laptop with these specs:

Intel Core I7 3630

Nvidia GPU 650m DDR 5

8GB of ram

Anyways, the problem is, no matter what game I play the temp will always go up to 80 - 90 degrees, no matter how demanding or not demanding it is.

At first I thought it was normal since a lot of people kept claiming that it happens to them to however,  let's put this in a perspective.

These games should be able to be played at high/max settings:  League of legends, Bioshock infinite, Dishonored, Darksiders 2, starcraft 2

However even at the lowest settings the temp goes up to 80 - 90 degrees the only difference is from using max settings it takes longer to achieve this but it still does it.

BUT it's not only the high demanding games doing this, it's also games such as age of mythology, it's quite an old game with low requirements but still it sends my temps up like crazy.

At idling the temps are around 55 - 58 degrees (Room temp 15 - 18 degrees) on full load it reaches 92 and then it starts throttling whilst staying at 92 until the game is turned off.

What I've been thinking, could it be possible that when the laptop was built the thermal paste was put on incorrectly? I've seen a lot of people complain about it, but I thought I'd ask someone else to.

Or do you think it's actually normal?

few questions and things you should do.

are you a carpet floor? if so move if off the ground

what fan settings do you use?

try taking out the graphics card and getting a high pressure air can blowing out the dust (may be causing issues) or take it to a local store to clean it

try taking the side of your case off and letting some air into it

hopefully this will work best of luck!

It's on a wooden flat surface.

How do I check that? As far as I'm aware it's blowing at maximum when it's at 90 degrees... Sounds like a jet engine

Ohhh I'm talking about a laptop not a desktop, sorry if I got you confused, however I will clean it up once I replace the thermal paste because from what I've been reading so far it seems

that there's a high chance of too much thermal paste being placed onto the gpu and cpu since it has happened to few other people.

I'm sorry guys for taking your time ^^

Are you sure you sure your are up to sort job? On a laptop is isn't going to be easy (although I've never worked on a lappy). I do know laptops run pretty hot (90's) in general so I wouldn't be surprised if that is normal temps. Is it the gpu or cpu or both that is running hot?

It's both of them that run hot, replacing the thermal paste on a laptop isn't that difficult, once you figure out how to take it apart that is.. Luckily there are Dell videos on how to do that which seemed quite easy so I'll be fine

Depending on how powerful the laptop is and the environment and how much air it gets

My previous 3 laptops ( I get new one every 2 - 3 years) never even reached 70 degrees even at the end of their cycle.

The problem is once it reaches 90 degrees it starts to throttle.. so I assume that's already an indicator that it shouldn't be there... Anyways I'll check out what's going on under the hood and then I'll know, but my guess is the thermal paste is incorrectly applied which usually causes these kind of problems since the heat transfer becomes horrible if you put too much or too little
