Microphone ajustments

So atm I have a mxl 990 and a scarlet 2i4 interface with a samson mic stand I was wondering how far should I set and depending on that whats a good game all im doing is talking on discord and using voicemeter to run it I hear about 4-6 inches is good but the gain feels a little over or underpowerd somtimes so I would like to know a great medium.
