Laptop overheating

My hp pavilion g4 from 2012 laptop is overheating with a max temp reaching up to 98C. I tried cleaning the cooler, nothing happens it still overheat. I invested in an external cooler but it still reaches high temperature. 

 

Idle temperature is about 75C and when I do my spreadsheets or any light work, temps can reach as high as 85C. I was thinking if i should replace my laptop or is there any fix to this overheating issues.

Try replacing the thermal paste on the cooler. It's an old laptop, it could have dried out.

That was my guess also. Sounds like the heat from your cpu is not transering to your cooler which seems fine. I would try that first as thermal compound will cost you at most around five bucks which is 100 times less the price of a new laptop.

WTF, my laptop runs Prime95 around this temperature

 

Replace thermal paste of CPU.
