question. thinkstation D30

i have been looking at an thinkstation D30 and i was wondering why it says support for 12 cores ( https://thinkstation-specs.com/thinkstation-d30/ ) if it runs with sandy bridge xeon processors that only support up to 8 cores max, and ivy bridge support 12 cores ?

Ivy was likely an upgrade part for the system.  Make sure you have at least one SB CPU available if you need to flash the BIOS.
