NOTHING WORKS (except Windows Server)

My HP ML350 G5 dos not like me. All I want is a normal OS that can run normally without special diag tools and shizz. I've tried everything down to the year of 2002 (nearly) and nothing has worked apart from Windows server 2008. Is there something special in server versions that allow it to do this? Or do I just have a crappy old PC? The system posts fine, then just blue screens, unless it's on a server one, then it just works.

Windows Server 2008 R2 can function identically to Windows 7. You can even enable Aero. Just install Desktop Experience and forget about Server Management.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Would this be possible in Server 2016, or am I limited to 2008 r2?

Excellent! I just need to get a code...

Any way to do this with 2016?

until you realize you cant get gpu drivers for your gaming GPU because NVIDIA and AMD dont allow you to run gaming drivers on windows server.

Sometimes you can get old drivers for old cards to work, but for something like my 390X or 970 I could not get drivers to work when I had used WS2012 and 2016. Its not offically supported so it can be a hit or miss. I had all sorts of strange issues occasionally come up when I switched to using a server OS as my main PC experience.

to OP: Check to see if you can get your gpu can get drivers.

Gaming - Ryzen 9800X3D | 64GB 6400mhz cl30 9070 XT

Homelab - many servers...constantly changing.

3970X/256GB - 5950X/128GB ECC - 5600G/96GB - 3400GE/16GB - 3400GE/16GB

Hmmm. Annoying. I don't actually have a card there now, but I want one, so I need an OS that can support it.

I have run Nvidia cards and AMD cards with Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2016 just fine.

News! I think that Windows 10 Pro seems to be working. Its going about now, doing its thing and installing device drivers, and I haven't seen the desktop yet, but it has lasted way longer than others. Hopefully this gets past the gpu issue, but I still have the problem of 3 PCI-E 4X slots instead of 16X, so I need an adapter, but it seems to be OK!

Will update in Hibernian morning

Yes, and the AMD one has a very old card they do not block drivers for, meaning no gaming (any recent games that is), and your one with a NVIDIA card has a Quadro, which is a server and workstation gpu, and specifically supported for windows server, its not a gaming gpu. My point was you're not throwing in a 390x, 1060,1080, 1070, ect, and getting drivers to work (which are required for modern games).

I wasn't talking about those, I was referencing other GPUs I've tried in the past. The ones in my signature run fine because they're older, I know that.

Is it a new laptop and still within warranty?

Also are you re-installing a OEM version of Windows on it; some laptops only allow specific 'styles' of Windows (OEM or Retail but not both) to be reinstalled

What are you talking about? This is a server machine, not a laptop in the slightest.

I just assumed that it was a laptop; i saw HP and jumped to a conclusion and the info in the title made it seem that the trying of the Server OS was more a testing to see if ANY OS installed

Look up the model. It’s a large server machine.

Yep. Full on dual xeons and 16gb ram.

Edit: Everything works except sound, because it doesn't have a sound card on board. Everything else is perfect, thanks for your help!
