What computer should I buy for photo editing on Lightroom and Photoshop?

I have about a $1000 budget, and I don't want to be obsolete in a year. Is an older Macbook Pro with good specs ok? It seems like any new sub $1000 Windows laptop has worse specs than 5 year old MacBook's on Craigslist.

What do you think? Anything's helpful

Really these programs only require dual cores and mostly favor RAM over more cores.

These programs also tend to run better on the Mac in my experience. Something newer than a 2013 MacBook Pro with at least 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is what I would recommend.

Ideally you could get one of the new MacBook Pros but those are out of your price range.

Dell XPS 9560 with a 7700HQ would be right up your alley, though it's about $500 over your ~$1000 price mark.

I personally wouldn't use a laptop for photo editing in Lightroom/Photoshop

Also windows computers can handle those programs just fine.

My system has an i5 + 8GB RAM and handles both programs just fine

I have been searching craigslist for an existing system that I could upgrade and grab a nice monitor for. In your system what do you have for a video card. I am assuming onboard graphics aren't enough
