over video call i told my friend how to take apart an old desktop pc to salvage the hard drive (as everything else is super outdated), but when he took it out is appears as if the drive has been split in half... I have never seen anything like this, is he able to put it back together?

Uh... Do you mean RAID? If you mean they split apart physically, that's what 2 normal hard drives should look like.

Those are two different drives. Someone may have added a second one if it wasn't shipped with two.
