So this whole problem started when Asus ai suite and asus gpu tweak stopped working on my windows 10 pc after the fall creators update and since then I have been unable to control my case fans and gpu fans. I left them as they were until today when I decided to delete and reinstall these applications. I deleted the most up to date application and downloaded their earlier versions. First I downloaded and installed gpu tweak and it worked. Then I installed ai suite and after rebooting, I couldn't use my mouse or keyboard to unlock my computer. Windows booted into the lock screen but from there it wont let me do anything. I know that my peripherals all work and have tried unplugging and re plugging them and leaving them unplugged only to replug them once booted. I have attempted boot from safe mode and the same thing happened. Additionally, I have a system image which I attempted to restore from, however it didnt work as it was in efi and I was in bios. (I was using my usb bootable drive) I know that my usb ports are working too because in the bios it detects all of my usb devices including my mouse and keyboard. If it helps I have an asus h170 pro gaming motherboard, intel i5 6600 and an asus strix rx 480. I don't want to have to reinstall windows and lose information, so what can I do? Thanks in advance!

1) Ensure mouse and keyboard are attached to USB 2.0 ports (beside the PS2 green/purple port)

2) Ensure all other USB devices are unplugged; remove any USB add-in cards if any

3) Reset BIOS to default values (try to boot with defaults)

4) In BIOS, make sure none of the fans are on Auto or if that is too much trouble, you can try disconnecting them (this is unlikely to be the issue, but fan settings once gave me hell)

5) Ensure correct amount of RAM is registering in BIOS

6) Try shutting down PC, removing power cord and holding power button for about 15 seconds; this will clear your RAM

If all the above failed, you can also try sacrificing rubber chickens to the PC Godz... (has never worked for me though).

On a more serious note, I'll add more suggestion if they occur to me.

Peace. \m/

I tried all of those but sadly nothing worked for me. All of my fans have manual fan curves that I set so I dont think that would be an issue. I read that some people experienced this problem because of a usb driver that was not turned on? but it worked before downloading ai suite, so I dont think that that could be it either? I dont have usb add in cards and all my peripherals are already in usb 2.0 ports. I unplugged everything else too. RAM is all good and clearing it didnt seem to do anything either. I guess i'll have to go buy some rubber chickens for your last suggestion lol. Also, I read that some people just used ps2 keyboard and mouse, but I dont own any, so I am going to get a set so i'll let you know if that works. In the mean time if you can find anything please do let me know. Thanks again!

Sometimes i've had it happen and replugging in the keyboard and mouse after boot would work. Wait for it to boot to the login screen and then unplug them and plug 'em back in.. See what happens. Seems it might have hosed up the usb drivers or something else that it was able to tweak..

Tried that too still nothing, I tried turning it on then plugging them in, unplugging and re plugging once booted and nothing worked. AI suite must've broken it somehow.

Sorry to hear nothing worked. If there is a PC/accessories store nearby, you might want to ask them for a USB-to-PS2 adapter for your keyboard.

I mentioned the fan bit because I had an issue once on an ASUS board where setting the fan to PWM would crash windows. I later figured out it probably had something to do with the AIO I was using (by process of elimination), so I'm wary of fan settings these days.

Yeah, I am going to go get an adapter later. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks for your help!

I'm having the exact same issues now. Wondering if anyone has an update or other suggestions.

The ps2 adapter did not work. I was going through the bios settings and messed something up so that I could no longer boot into windows. So then I reset the cmos and now I cant boot in at all, it goes straight to bios. So now I reinstalled windows 10 and am going to restore from system image. Its a massive pain but now that I think of it, I am pretty sure you can just reinstall the usb driver on a usb and install it onto the pc from that.

I was at work today thinking that a windows reinstall was going to be my only option. The only bright side to this is that I have most of my stuff saved onto a HDD and have my OS on an SSD. The USB driver makes sense only if you can get into windows. I only have access to my BIOS and like you, my keyboard/mouse doesn't work on my windows logon screen. Thank you for the update!!

That sucks, Ive locked my self out that way before.

Tell you what, it was a little funny months later :P .

But man was I pissed at the time.

You probably could of gotten a pci card with usb slots on it and got the keyboard working that way,  at least until you could fix the problem.

Ive got one laying around now just in case ;)

Update!!!

I just had the same issue before. I was reading the above stuff about getting a PS2 to usb adapter. Luckily, I found one lying around but when I tried it the first time it didn't work for me. What I did is I went back into the BIOS and turned disable the legacy and other usb settings. What was interesting is that the mouse has lights when it is on. When it was in the PS2 connection the lights were on, but when I tried to usb connect it no lights. It seems something in the AI suite package turns off all the USB ports.
