So I've been using a lil' two drive NAS and all it really is two hard drives that connect to the usb port on the back of my router. Its been nice but its pretty skimpy and it really has no support features or redundancy and with it being limited to 4TB (Not specified if max capacity or each slot). I'd like to build my own into a old desktop case. It supports mATX motherboards at the largest and I don't plan on doing anything other than using it as a file server and a data backup for my computers. I'd like it to be at least raid 5 and possibly support raid 10 as well if I'd like to add more drives later. I'm looking for a target of at least 10TB but beyond that, I'm not sure what sort of cpu would be good for that or if its ok just to get the cheapest available because it doesn't actually matter. How much ram is too little or too much. Does drive speed matter? That sort of thing. Budget? Uhh... I'm probably looking at $400ish for just hard drives so maybe something in the $600 to $800 range (USD).

Things I don't need will be the keyboard, mouse, and display. I have some old ones that'll be more than adequate for this machine.

Seems like a bit much for what I need and I'm planning on using something like freeNAS for the os but since your build shows standard desktop parts, I might just pulls stuff out of my scrap bins and see what I might need to add. I know I have an old Asus crosshair 2 board and a phenom II 940 black but I don't know if their in working order. I might head down to a used computer store and find a working cheapo psu to benchtest the parts. I might end up just needing to buy hard drives in the end, which saves a bunch of money. :3

Don't run your components on a cheapo PSU. Something can die m8.

I just need a test psu to see if they work, I don't want to buy a new one just to find out that they didn't work and now I have a new psu with no computer to use it on. Frys return policy kinda sucks cause you have to pay a restock fee. I mean, I get why but it still sucks.
