Alright so last week i finally got myself a new build. It worked great.. up untill yesterday. Spec's of the computer are as follows :

i7 8700k

rog strix 1080 ti (non oc)

32g gskill trident rbg

asus rog z370z

corsair h115i

corsair RMx 850w psu

1tb samsung ssd

250g samsung m.2

Put the rig together and had no problems what so ever last week, even monday was trouble free. Then yesterday i received some corsair LL series case fans which after installing i started to drop frames like crazy whenever i tried to play fortnite. I made sure all drivers were up to date and still, dropped frames. I decided maybe i had somehow downloaded something but i couldnt find anything so i tried to convert back to how the pc was before, i removed the fans did a fresh reinstall, installed all drivers, started up fortnite and it still ran like shit. (i mean it was playable but running no where near as well as it was before) i went from getting 200+ fps on high settings with ultra view distance down to getting ~90 fps And it would dip below 60. also when i start searching for a game it drops all the way down to 15fps for a few seconds then back to 200 just sitting at the menu. Any thoughts on what is causing this since it just hit out of the blue.

sorry if its alot of rambling, i am just super frustrated, if anything needs clarification just let me know

Are you thermal throttling at all? You could have accidentally unseated or unplugged your CPU cooler. Also are you sure the fans are running correctly?

Since you have a Samsung SSD, did you install and run the Samsung Magician software?  In that software is a switch to turn on/enable what they call Rapid Mode.  Try that along with the suggestion above and see if that doesn't help.

I believe rapid mode not compatible with M.2

I would do some monitoring to try and figure out what is happening.

  • Open task manager to performance tab.
  • Run GPU-Z to monitor graphics card.

Try and see if you can see any resources maxing out when the problem occurs. If you're lucky it will highlight the problem, or at least give you a clue.

Honestly, based on all of the rest of the troubleshooting inquiries I've seen lately, I think recent windows updates caused these frame rate issues. The fresh install wouldn't have fixed that since it would have just reinstalled the current update.

Tons of people seem to be getting similar issues.

I'd personally wait it out until at least the end of the month.
