New build, games keep crashing soon after launch

Build:

OS: Windows 10 pro 64bit

M/B: gigabyte gaming 5 z370

CPU: i7-8700k (not overclocked)

GPU: ZOTAC AMP extreme gtx 1080

RAM: corsair hyperx 2x8GB 2400MHZ

SSD: 500gb Samsung 960 evo m.2

HDD: Seagate barracuda 2TB

PSU: Corsair rm750i

CPU cooler: AIO corsair H55i

 

 Hey guys, 

Whenever I seem to load an intensive game (e.g. destiny 2, pubg) the game will only run for about 1 minute before freezing and then crashing, I have tried using lower settings to see if my gpu was being pushed too hard but the issue still persists and I have no idea why. Please help, I'd love to be able to game on maximum settings with these games as I intended when building this PC.

Your GPU can handle maximum settings in most games, but you need to ensure that you're running the latest Nvidia drivers. http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/129081/en-us

I have already done that but still having issues, also forgot to put in originally, BIOS version is 73

Alright, just wanted to make sure. Could you go to Task Manager and upload a screenshot of your Memory usage under the Performance tab?

First one is just with chrome open and the second one is with destiny 2 running

I suspected that it might be bad memory, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Try updating to BIOS version F5e for your motherboard at https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z370-AORUS-Gaming-5-rev-10#support-dl. There seems to be a patch note describing an issue regarding 1060/1070/1080 graphics cards. If that doesn't help, try uninstalling GeForce Experience.

cheers I was just about to, just wondering to perform a bios update, do i have to install the bios driver onto a separate USB then boot off it using the bios?

It seems that your motherboard uses an executable to flash the BIOS. You should be able to just run autoexec.bat.

That's the best way to do it, some Bios' have a utility to update through your network. Never trust them with something that important

Alright. You can either use the Gigabyte @BIOS utility, which is a steaming pile of garbage, or put Z380AG5.F5e on a flash drive and use GIGABYTE Q-Flash (press END on POST) in your BIOS.

Just to be clear, only copy the highlighted file onto a usb and then use gigabyte q-flash in bios? OR copy the whole bios driver download onto a usb and do it in BIOS

Only copy the .F5e file to an empty flash drive. Make sure the flash drive is NTFS or it may not show up in Q-Flash.

okey all done and didnt brick the board, what's next? or should I just test a game and see hwo it goes?

I'd suggest that you go ahead and test a game. If the BIOS update didn't help at all, I would suggest that you try uninstalling GeForce Experience.

That's unfortunate. I would suggest that you try to use the Display Driver Uninstaller at http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html and install fresh drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/129081/en-us.

I'm going to go back to see if your memory is the issue. Try grabbing MemTest86 from https://www.memtest86.com/downloads/memtest86-usb.zip and using imageUSB.exe to create bootable media on a blank flash drive using memtest86-usb.img as an image. Once you do this, boot into the flash drive and select "(S)tart Test". Let me know if there are any errors.

When i first installed windows I accidentally installed the 32 bit version So i had to reinstall with the 64 bit version and it said that it would save the data from the 32 bit version in a folder on my drive, could this be causing my struggles?

Probably not. Windows is referring to a folder called Windows.old located on your C drive. This should not be causing any issues.

Just about to run the test, another thing i wanted to check, I'm pretty sure my gpu comes factory overclocked and I've read that it can be an issue for some games and drivers, could that be the case here?

Factory overclocking shouldn't negatively impact performance. It is often manual overclocking that may cause such an issue.

You could try a clean installation of Windows 10 64 bit to see if something happened that caused the upgrade from 32 bit to fail, but other than that I'm pretty much out of suggestions.
