Hi!

Today I helped my friend build his computer but when everything was assembled we couldn't power it up. The GPU seems to be getting power as there is a small light on it. There doesn't seem to be an LED light on the motherboard so it's hard to know if it is getting power or not. Here are the components:

Motherboard: Gigabyte B350 GA-AB350M-HD3

PSU: Fractal Design Integra M 550W

Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 3GB DUAL OC

Case: Fractal Design Define R4

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1500X 3.6 GHz 18MB

RAM: Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 2400MHz Fury Black

SSD: Toshiba OCZ TR200 240GB

We have tried replugging the power cables to the cpu and powerboard, reseating the RAM and the power button cable from the front panel. The power led doesn't turn on and no fans are moving. I read that I could try shorting the pins to the power button but how can I do that? Could I just try connecting the two pins with a screwdriver? I really hope the motherboard isn't fault as that would be a pain in the ass.

Remove all non-essentials while it's off, and see if it gets angry at you when you try to turn it on.

No point shorting the pins, that's what the power button is already doing.

Failing that, I'd try the PSU in another computer just to rule it out.

I figured it might be worth to try shorting the pins if the power button is faulty. Essentials are basically just RAM, CPU and power to CPU and motherboard and the power button to the front panel?

Did you plug in both the 24 pin power and the 8 pin AUX power into the board?

The essentials for the mobo to post are CPU, CPU Power, MB Power. If your fans don't start spinning with just that, and you don't hear any beep codes, then the computer either isn't getting power, or the motherboard is completely toast. If it isn't getting power, then you just work backwards and follow the power.

We didn't get one of those minispeaker for the motherboard so I don't think we can hear one of those beep codes unfortunately. I'll have to try with the just the essentials tomorrow.

As mentioned I would make sure the PSU is working by testing it with another computer that you know already works. Other than that the only thing I can suggest is to make sure the front pannel connectors are all plugged in to the proper spots on the header. Sometimes the labeling for where they go is a bit confusing and can take some trial and error before getting right.

Not nessesary for powering up. Easier to remove them as factors. The motherboard will still power up, and post, but it will throw an error if it's working properly.

Some have speakers intergrated into the motherboard. My GA-970A-UD3P R.2 does, so it doesn't nessesarily require a speaker. In addition, a speaker isn't entirely nessesary if the fans begin to spin.

I thought the PSU was alright as the GPU was getting power but I'll try it in another computer as well. It doesn't matter what orientation the power button is connected, it just need to be connected to the two correct pins, right? I only need to power button connected to the F Panel just to test how it works?

Alright, I'll head over to my friend tomorrow again and try with the essentials only to see if I can get the fans to spin.

I must have missed that part, im at work and skimming over these replies fairly quickly, still worth a go though I guess if you have the time. And yeah, the orientation of the front panel connector shouldn't matter as long as it's plugged into the correct 2 pins. As far as only needing those pins plugged in to test it I believe you are correct. Not 100 percent sure on that though.

Thanks for the link. I'll following along that checklist tomorrow to see if any of those solutions work.

I'm pretty sure I got the Power and Reset buttons connected to the right pins, was just unsure if + and - mattered. The Power LEDs were a little confusing though as there was one area that said PLED with two pins and then another area with 3 pins saying PWR_LED. But I guess the power LED doesn't really matter.

Polarity doesn't matter for the power switch. For the LEDs, either will work. The 3 pin PWR_LED section is for multi-colored switches. So long as you've got a negative and a positive in the correct polarity, it's all good.

Thanks! That's good info to know.

Sounding more and more like the motherboard is dead, which is very unfortunate. Let's hope that's not the case.

Yeah, I'm crossing my fingers that's not the case!
