Hello,

I am looking to build a 1-2k PC build for my cousin that mainly plays games on his single 1080p monitor, but is also a CS major and wants some options to screw around. I haven't been into the hardware game much recently since Ive built my PC a couple years ago, so I wanted some feedback on this build I randomly put together. I'm looking to get it within the next couple days so I only used Amazon and Newegg.

edit: I am aware it is not really possible to future proof something but that is my cousin's words.

I don't see anything wrong with it, the only few things I'd change if it were my build would be to try and find 16GB of ram for the same price (this), and maybe go for a 512GB SSD or less and get a large HDD for games or something.

Tech, engineering, gaming and promoting the metric system. These are my things.

Lover of Linux.

Futureproof isn't a thing. So strike that word from your vocabulary.

I immediately see something that needs replacing. The 7th gen processor. 8th gen is out, and makes 7th gen rather obsolete for new builds. I'd also consider getting a better case (S340 Elite, P300), don't get a 120mm AIO, and try to get faster RAM.

The most "future-proof" you can be is either 8th Gen Intel instead of 7th Gen or Ryzen.

RAM can be overclocked to higher speeds, it would be cheaper to get a slower kit and overclock.

that's very finicky, its hard to get your ram to the rated speed in the first place

Oh absolutely, but did you see what he's paying for that kit? $150 can get you 3200mhz 16GB kits. For $100 you can get a 3000mhz 8GB kit.

Also, isn't the sweet spot 2400mhz/2666mhz for OCing to 3000mhz and beyond? I think I remember Jay saying something about that once..

Edit 2 electric boogaloo: the only thing needed in the build is the actual PC, peripherals are unnecessary/will be purchased separately if needed.

First some comments on the build,

- The i7 7700K is now last-gen and should be replaced with an 8700K

- Generally 120mm liquid coolers are bad, louder than their air cooler counterparts while not performing better, replace with an air or 240mm+ liquid cooler

- That's so much money for 8GB! Instead buy 16 they'll be worth it.

- No need for such a large SSD. A 1TB hard drive + 250 or 500GB is a better combo

- There are cheaper alternatives to the case / PSU that might work for your cousin

Now a proposed build for the same 1700:

You can, but sometimes it's going to require more voltage than you want to push. I don't know about Coffee Lake but Skylake didn't work with RAM over 1.35V for some reason, though you can most likely run DDR4 at 1.5V without problem if the platform doesn't complain.
