Happy New Year to everyone.

I am new to all this and I was wondering if someone could help me finding CPU? I have been looking at CPUs for weeks now and can not come up with an answer of which one to go with for the desktop I want to build. This is my first PC build. I do know that I do want to stay up with the times because technology only keeps moving forward.

My old desktop I can not rebuild because it is a Gateway BTX case from 2005.

I am looking to build a computer that would be a server for my movies, music but still be able to use it for everyday computing. I normally am on the computer while I watch movies or listen to music. I like to play a few games on it too but they are nothing like the gamers play. I also would be also like to be able to leave it on over night if I can. I know that I will be transcoding some of my movies because I have already run into that problem already the whole movie just shuts down. I am using right now an Intel Inspiron 7548U laptop Intel Core i7-5500U CPU @ 2.40GHz clock speed 2.4Ghz and 16GBs of Ram. I have been looking on Passmark for the past two days going back and forth between AMD and Intel.

I also need help finding a motherboard to go with it. It is to confusing.

Boy this sure is a lot different then back in the day when I was learning about this stuff.

So if someone could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

What kind of budget are you looking at?  When you say 'nothing like the gamers play' can you give examples of games you are playing?

What games do you play? By the sounds of it, I think an i5-8400 or 8600K would be enough for you.

I play like Bejeweled 2 deluxe, card games, ect. Like I said nothing like the gamers.

Ahhh so no GPU needed.  All of your requirements can be met by pretty much any new CPU as long as it has dedicated graphics.  Intel does, and AMD does not, so I agree with Crunchy Dragon, an I5 8400 would be plenty for you.

Thank you both for the suggestion that was the way I was leaning until someone said that they run hotter than AMDs.

yeah because they use bad thermal integrated materials (TIM) that is found on 7700K, i don't know if this is true to coffeelake but just beware

AMD has better value tho for your buck even you are using your computer just that (at least until Zen+ arrives or the budget coffee boards arrived)

Thank you for the advice. I am trying to keep the max TDP down on the chips that I was looking at. Which I thought would help with keeping it a little cooler. Also planning on installing plenty of cooling to my case.

then Ryzen is gonna be a chip that can be tamed well, the mainstream Ryzen performs well over air, just make sure you use something from Noctua, Be Quiet, Cooler Master, Cryorig (those are the reputable brands for me)

So the Intel does run hotter? Ok thank you. Sorry about reposting somewhat the same thing. What kind of ideas do you have for a good Motherboard to go with an Intel 8th Generation for someone like me?

If you go AMD you will need to buy a graphics card and have a motherboard with a PCI slot.  I have both AMD and Intel chips, I am no fan boy, but if all you do is browsing, light gaming movie server/streaming and basic office type stuff, then an intel i5 or i3 will be plenty of power.

These CPUs wil have coolers supplied with it.  These aren't the greatest coolers, but they will work just fine with a Non-K CPU.

The other way to go would be a Ryzen 3 or 5 and a Nvidia 1030.

I was just looking at the coffeelake CPUs to try to figure out which motherboard to go with. These are the last things that I have to button down. Then I can move forward in ordering the parts. I am looking forward to my first build. My boy friend wants me to build him one after I am done with mine. LOL

270R will take regular, micro and mini.  Have a look here.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007627 601306867 600009028 600009016 600009017&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=36

These all work with 8th gen intel.

Unfortunately they start about $110.

You could go with a 7th gen for a lot less, or wait about a month till cheaper motherboards come out for the 8th gen.

Or, if you got the $$$ now go for it.

Well thank you very much. My problem is I don't know which I should go for? Should I concentrate on the amount of ram it will support? I know the Intel CPU has graphics onboard so I don't have to worry about that. The technology has just grown so fast that I don't understand as much as I use to. Either that or I am getting to old.
