Opinions on my build

Digital

I have planned a build and would love to get an opinion on if its good or not. I did not list the parts in pcpartpicker so apologies if it's a little more confusing, its a local pc store here in Finland. The build can be found here.

Also please advice on what GPU you would pair with that build. I am planning on getting GTX 1060 3Gb or the 6Gb variant.

Not bad!

Things I'd change:

  • Save some money and go with a SATA m.2 drive
  • Get the CryOrig H7 if it's available, much better cooler
  • Spend a little more and get the i5 8400, and pair it with an Asus motherboard

If you can, the 6GB version is better, but if you're tight on budget the 3GB is only worse in some titles. You'd have to check reviews to see if it affects you in what you play.

I think most people should be able to figure out the list, if they can't then they need to work on their reading comprehension :P

You're asking for opinions, so here is mine: it's 100% junk because it does not have an AMD CPU.

I checked the cryorig H7 and it indeed beats the 212 evo - in aesthetics as well. I'll change it right away and save few euros.

I am not familiar with m.2 drives at all, so can you elaborate a little? What am I losing if I change to SATA, and can you give an example drive so I can check if it really saves me any money when I buy locally.

Do you think this is a good idea? The i5 8400 costs basically the same amount, so it would really change my budget anyway, but it's clockspeed is way slower - 2,8GHz to 4,0GHz. The only advantage I see is 2 extra cores and 1Mb cache. Do modern games utilize the extra cores at all?

What AMD CPU&MOBO combo would you suggest that is better than what I have picked - and mostly why is it better?

You asked for opinions. And that's what you've got from me. It's better, because it's AMD. Again, my opinion. (and I would asume there are facts to be found as to why it's better, do some research perhaps?)

+ you are looking at a "local pc store in finland". Not pcpartspicker. Don't know what's available to you.

SATA is "slower" than NVMe. However, you're pretty unlikely to notice it in day to day use if this is a gaming rig. Games might load 10 - 15 seconds faster. Is it worth it? Only you can answer that one. Personally I'd rather save a little money to dump into a better video card, or get a higher capacity drive. (At a budget like this, that is. I plan on getting a 1TB NVMe drive, but it'll also be a no-holds-barred system :P)

Asus boards can turbo lock the chip at 3.8ghz. So it'll be plenty fast. In the benchmarks I've seen the 8350k at 5ghz performs marginally better (at most 5fps, but most often within 1 or 2 fps) than the 8400. The two extra cores will be used by games that take advantage of them. Plus, you can save even more money; the 8400 doesn't really need a cooler, so something like the CryOrig M9i will do nicely. They're super cheap over here, not sure how much they are there.

As for AMD, they're competitive. I'd rather go Intel just for the ease of building; no need to make sure it's Samsung memory, no need to mess around with overclocks to have a system that's on par with something that is just set up and go.

I can't wait for Ryzen 2 though. Should be a much more interesting battle then.
