Hello everybody. This is my first time actually creating a topic so excuse the format of it. Anyways to the point.

I am currently using all sound off my motherboard, I have optical 5.1 speakers, which I use with people over. I also have two headsets (Corsair Vengeance 2000 and the Afterglow Universal Wireless Headset) which I use for gaming by myself. I am looking into upgrading my sound set up yet I am very new to it, and while I have watch many of Linus' videos that he does have on sound (and some others) I am still confused of what to do. I have heard of many things like amps, dacs, sound cards, and just buying a really expensive headset. I just don't know what to do. Could I get some help?

In summary, I just want input on what people think is best to do, and don't worry about price, really doesn't matter. (Don't go insane with price though.)

Thanks in advance to everybody who replies. -MCiLuZiioNz  :)

spend all your dough on decent headphones and get an amp if you want.  Start with cans around the dt770, K701, HD 598 sort of thing and go up from there. Listen to whatever you can.

Your money should go in good headphones, and most of them work fine on onboard solutions. Getting a dedicated amp is a good idea only if your headphones don't get loud enough or if you hear static/noise. A dedicated DAC is overkill.

I invite you to read the FAQ at the top of this section. Also, what's your budget?

Yes I did read the FAQ and I can't see what to buy first. I know it says good headphones, but are the ones I have fine? Also, my friend had purchased a sound card and said it sounds a lot better with his already good headphones. My budget is ~$300-$500

No sound card.

Those headsets are not good, you need to buy real headphones.

No sound card? Alright then. Are there any headphones anybody can recommend strongly?

High end sennheiser. Look at their website. If you need a mic, get a mod mic

I've heard many good things about Sennheiser, never actually listened through one of their headsets. Also, I've heard of mod mic as well, seems like a good option.

Mod Mics are great if you want an audiophile grade pair of headphones but also want to have a mic and don't want on are your desk. Your voice sounds very good (one of my friends has one and we skype will playing games) and is only like $30

Sennheiser isn't for everyone. You either love it or hate it.

If you listen to more bassy music, you won't like them.

Well, I happen to listen to bass heavy music (i.e. dubstep :P)

Yeah I would skip on Sennhesier.

For $500 you can get whatever you want really.

Let's see...You're going to need to pick up some sort of amp. I can't recommend my own products but they would be a good solution for you.

Headphones -

HE-400's

DT 990/880/770

HE-500's used

AKG K702 65th anniversery or K712 Pro *same headphone, different colors*

Used pair of TH600's

Can't really think of any more off the top of my head but that's a good place to start.

The HD 650 is a classic basshead headphone - just cuz you like your V curves doesn't mean everyone else does.

 HD 600 had no bass.

Maybe not heavy bass, but the treble isn't as harsh as the Beyer. which makes the bass more enjoyable.
